SUMMARY:PHOTO WALK: Rediscovering the Barbican
DESCRIPTION:A lot of us have taken our cameras to the Barbican before – but there is a hidden gem in revisiting a place many times. The weather and light is always different\, the chance moments and encounters can never be anticipated. There are always new angles and approaches to discover. Revisiting forces one to think harder and go a bit deeper. \n\n\n\nCONCRETE!\n\n\n\nThe Barbican is the perfect place to connect architecural lines with people\, looking at the contrast between hard and soft – quite literally. Contrast is what gives an image energy\, the push and pull between two competing forces. Will the concrete win? \n\n\n\nWe will of course have fun too and go for a well deserved drink afterwards. \n\n\n\nWHO IS IT FOR?\n\n\n\nAll levels welcome\, and I’m on hand to offer tips and advice. This is not a beginner lesson though\, so it’s best if you know how to use your camera for this one. Or use your phone instead! \n\n\n\nDETAILS:\n\n\n\nLocation: Barbican CentreDate: Friday\, 20 March 2026Time: 4:00 PM – 6 PMTickets: Go to Meetup.com to book – it’s Grete’s group on there \n\n\n\nWHERE TO MEET:\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet inside the Barbican Underground Station. \n\n\n\nAFTERWARDS – 6pm onwards:\n\n\n\nOptional drinks for photo chats and socialising at the Shakespeare Pub nearby. \n\n\n\nFollow me on Instagram! I will regularly be sharing photos from our walks\, including your own photos if you like. \n\n\n\nHope to see you all there! \n\n\n\nCONTACT / RSVP:\n\n\n\nGrete on 07885899908 grete@ghjstudio.com for any questionsIan on ‭07775 933371‬ \n\n\n\nFUTURE EVENTS:\n\n\n\nSign up to my NEWSLETTER to get notified about future GHJ EXPLORE workshops\, photo walks and photo trips around the UK and abroad.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Windswept in the Gorse
DESCRIPTION:This time we’re heading to The New Forest\, Hampshire for a mostly monochrome take on this remote\, windswept place where the clouds hang heavily and the ground is healing its scars from the annual burning of the heathland. We will be shooting our mesmerisingly beautiful model (pictured) amongst the heather and gorse\, and hopefully some of the wild ponies – we might have to go looking for them\, but probably not very far. With so little natural colour in the scene\, going monochrome instead can really bring out the drama of the landscape as it allows for a lot more contrast in the editing. It’s not mandatory though – just a suggestion. \n\n\n\nGrete is creating a visual dialogue between the gorse and her headdress\n\n\n\nIan Ryall’s not quite so monochrome take on the scene. But look at the lovely colours\, so painterly\n\n\n\nWHO IS IT FOR:\n\n\n\nAnyone who would love to get a more cinematic and dramatic feel to their portraiture and want to learn a bit more about how to make good posing choices. If portraiture isn’t your thing\, then the landscape itself and the wild ponies offer plenty to shoot. It is best to know how to use your camera in M (manual) mode and understand exposure – the relationship between shutter speed\, aperture and ISO\, but it’s not essential as this knowledge develops over time. Grete will be on hand for tips and suggestions\, some technical\, some artistic. After all\, if a photo doesn’t make you feel something\, then all the technique in the world can’t make up for it. \n\n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n\n\nCamera\, and a kit lens will work fine. Let’s go a bit wide this time to really capture all the detail and vastness of this desolate landscape that surrounds our model. Lens range between 17-50mm\, but it’s up to you really. Tripod for landscape enthusiasts\, but handheld works too.Feel free to bring your own soft filters like Pro Mist or Cinebloom etc\, but we also have them on hand for you to try. We will also provide some speedlights for Nikon\, Canon and Sony. \n\n\n\nWHERE:\n\n\n\nNew Forest\, Hampshire – fairly close to Southampton. The precise location will be revealed once you have booked\, and there is a train station right next to where we’ll be. \n\n\n\nWANT TO STAY OVERNIGHT?\n\n\n\nWe realise travel to the New Forest and back in one day can be a lot\, so we recommend staying overnight at the Beaulieu Hotel for around £120 per night\, and it’s right next to a train station. This gives you the opportunity to explore the area at leisure and capture more of the ponies the next day. Please get in touch if you need more info on this trip. \n\n\n\nTICKETS:\n\n\n\n£95. Only 6 spaces for this one so hurry up and book! We have a 2 bookings minimum for going ahead with the event. See our FAQ page for more info.
